Student hit by school bus in West Valley City

A 15-year-old boy was seriously injured Wednesday morning when a Granite School District bus hit him in a crosswalk.

The bus was turning left near 3100 S. 2200 West in West Valley City at 6:34 a.m. when it struck the sophomore at Granger High School, said Granite School District spokesman Ben Horsley.

The teen initially was reported to have suffered minor injuries. However police later learned he suffered a skull fracture, brain bleeding and broken ribs as well as cuts and bruises, said West Valley City police Sgt. Chad Evans. The boy was taken to Intermountain Medical Center.

Evans said the boy crossed against the light while the bus had a green arrow. Police are considering citing the teen for crossing against a signal. The woman driving the bus will not be cited, Evans added.

Horsley said the driver has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of a district investigation. The investigation will determine if any substances were involved and if the driver had past disciplinary actions against her. The outcome of the investigation could include an array of sanctions, including termination. However, Horsley added that the fact that driver was not cited and apparently was not at fault would impact and expedite the investigation.

Horsley called the district investigation a standard procedure that happens after any accident.
