The inmates elected to call it "Behind Bars Honey."
And, they boasted, it's "so good it should be a crime."
That description got a good laugh out of Salt Lake County Council members Tuesday, when County Sheriff Jim Winder gave them jars of honey filled by jail inmates who learned horticulture skills in a rehabilitation program underwritten by the council.
"The council has been wonderful to support" programs designed to keep inmates from returning to jail, Winder said, noting his incarcerated beekeepers collected about 900 pounds of honey.
And the name? It was decided in a contest, Winder said, assuring the council members "I didn't make it up."
"Someone in jail's got a future in marketing," quipped Leslie Reberg, administrative assistant to Councilman Sam Granato.
