Don Christensen is ending his term as a West Valley City councilman but his contributions to the community will continue.

The retired educator and school administrator, who won election to an at-large seat on the council in 2009, said he will remain active in civic affairs. His plans include continuing to serve on the Sister City Committee and being a member of other civic groups.

Christensen, 68, a 1963 graduate of Granger High School, ran for West Valley City mayor and lost in the August primary. His four-year term on the council ends in January. The councilman has a long history of service to the city and state, including stints on the West Valley Civic Committee and the State Board of Education.

He said maintaining economic growth, which included recruiting new businesses and revitalizing Valley Fair Mall, was one of the biggest accomplishments of council members during his time in office.

Councilman Tom Huynh said Christensen has served the residents of the diverse city well, including the minority communities.

To Councilman Corey Rushton, Christensen "is the guy you want to have as your neighbor."

"He was involved in everything," Rushton said. " The city will miss his versatility and his institutional knowledge."
