Letter: Why doesn't Utah clean up 'natural products' industry?

USA Today published a feature article on the shady side of the natural products industry ("Unmasking the people behind risky pills," USA Today, Dec. 20). It detailed the criminal pasts of executives and devious use of undeclared pharmaceuticals in many supplements sold to the public, putting their health and safety at risk.

Utah has one of the country's highest density of natural product companies and is home to the United Natural Products Alliance. We also have some of the best technical capabilities to address this problem, at the University of Utah and Weber State University.

We have Sen. Orrin Hatch historically supporting this industry. Utah has the assets in place to take a leadership position to clean up this problem.

The question is why has it not?
