KINGS 3, AVALANCHE 2

LOS ANGELES • Martin Jones made 23 saves and stopped all three shots in the shootout to become the second goalie in NHL history to win each of his first eight games, and the Los Angeles Kings got goals from Jeff Carter and Justin Williams in a 3-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday.

Jones has allowed just eight goals on 234 shots while filling in for the injured Jonathan Quick, and has posted shutouts against Montreal, Edmonton and the New York Islanders. The only other goalie to win his first eight games was Philadelphia's Bob Froese in 1982-83.

This was the second shootout involving Jones, who in his NHL debut on Dec. 3 stopped all nine shots in the tiebreaker for a 3-2 victory over the Anaheim Ducks. In this one, he stopped Matt Duchene, PA Parenteau and Ryan O'Reilly. The only goal in the shootout was by Anze Kopitar, the Kings' second shooter.

The Kings are off to the best start after 37 games in franchise history at 25-8-4, and have won nine of their last 10 games. They are 22-1-2 when allowing fewer than three goals.

O'Reilly and Erik Johnson scored power-play goals and Duchene had two assists for the Avalanche, 4-4-2 in their last 10 games following a 17-5-5 start.

PENGUINS 4, FLAMES 3

PITTSBURGH • Sidney Crosby scored his 20th goal of the season, helping Pittsburgh beat Calgary for its season-high seventh straight victory.

The Penguins led 4-1 late in the second period and had to hold off the Flames for their 10th straight win at home and 12th victory in their last 13 games.

Crosby had a goal and two assists to extend his season-high points streak to 10 games. He leads the NHL with 54 points. Pascal Dupuis, Harry Zolnierczyk and James Neal also scored.

Mike Cammalleri, Jiri Hudler and Paul Byron scored for Calgary. The Flames have lost four straight and six of their last nine.

RED WINGS 5, MAPLE LEAFS 4, SO

TORONTO • Daniel Alfredsson scored the shootout winner for Detroit against Toronto Maple Leafs in a Winter Classic preview.

The Red Wings had lost 11 straight shootouts, six this season.

Tomas Tatar scored for Detroit with 6:16 left in regulation to tie it at 4.

Pavel Datsyuk, Joakim Andersson and Tomas Jurco had first-period goals for the Red Wings.

David Clarkson, Dion Phaneuf, Joffrey Lupul and Cody Franson scored for Toronto. The Maple Leafs have lost six of their last eight games.

The teams will meet again in the Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Jan. 1.

COYOTES 4, SENATORS 3, OT

OTTAWA, Ontario • Antoine Vermette completed a hat trick at 2:23 of overtime to lift Phoenix past Ottawa.

Vermette pounced on the loose puck in front of goalie Craig Anderson and pushed it through to the back of the net to beat his former team. Radim Vrbata also scored to help the Coyotes snap a three-game losing streak.

Vermette tied it on a power play with 2:13 left in the third period. He took a pass from David Moss and deposited the puck into an empty net behind the fallen Anderson.

Marc Methot, former Phoenix forward Kyle Turris and Zack Smith added a goal. The Senators have lost three straight.

BRUINS 4, SABRES 1

BOSTON • David Krejci snapped a tie and set up Milan Lucic's goal to help Boston split a two-game set with Buffalo.

Reilly Smith had a power-play and an empty-netter for Boston, which won its seventh straight at home. The Bruins haven't lost there in regulation since late October, going 12-0-2 in their last 14 games.

Zemgus Girgensons scored for the Sabres, who beat the Bruins 4-2 in Buffalo on Thursday night.

DEVILS 5, CAPITALS 4, OT

WASHINGTON • Andy Greene scored 43 seconds into overtime, and Marek Zidlicky had two goals in New Jersey's comeback victory over Washington,

Jaromir Jagr scored his 13th goal and added two assists. Dainius Zubrus had a goal and an assist for New Jersey, which trailed 3-1 after two periods.

Alex Ovechkin scored his 30th goal and Joel Ward had a goal and an assist for Washington. Jason Chimera and Mikhail Grabovski also scored for Washington.

BLUE JACKETS 6, FLYERS 3

COLUMBUS, Ohio • Ryan Johansen and R.J. Umberger each scored two goals and Columbus pulled away in the third period to beat Philadelphia.

The game came 48 hours after the Blue Jackets led 3-0 after two periods and 4-2 with 5 minutes left in Philadelphia, with the Flyers scoring five times in the final period in a 5-4 win.

David Savard had a goal and an assist and Boone Jenner also scored for the Blue Jackets. Tempering the victory was the loss of Blue Jackets forward Marian Gaborik, who broke a collarbone in the first period.

Wayne Simmonds had two goals and Sean Couturier also scored for the Flyers.

CANADIENS 4, PREDATORS 3, OT

NASHVILLE, Tenn. • David Desharnais scored at 1:43 of overtime lift Montreal past Nashville.

Desharnais stripped the puck from defenseman Mattias Ekholm along the left boards, skated to the left faceoff dot and ripped a slap shot over goalie Carter Hutton's left shoulder.

P.K. Subban, Max Pacioretty and Tomas Plekanec also scored to help Montreal win for the second time in three games. Gabriel Bourque, Nick Spaling, and Shea Weber scored for Nashville. The Predators have lost three straight.

LIGHTNING 3, HURRICANES 2, OT

TAMPA, Fla. • Radko Gudas scored 2:16 into overtime to give Tampa Bay the victory over Carolina.

Gudas beat Justin Peters, who kept the Hurricanes in the game with a number of great saves, from the right circle during a 3-on-1. Victor Hedman and Martin St. Louis also scored for the Lightning.

Peters finished with 47 saves. Jiri Tlusty had a pair of goals.

DUCKS 5, ISLANDERS 3

UNIONDALE, N.Y. • Ryan Getzlaf scored three goals and Anaheim rallied for its team-record eighth straight win, beating New York.

Mathieu Perreault and Kyle Palmieri added goals for the Ducks. Thomas Vanek scored twice, and Frans Nielsen added a goal for New York.

BLUES 6, OILERS 0

EDMONTON, Alberta • Chris Stewart scored three goals and added an assist as St. Louis took advantage of reeling Edmonton in a shutout rout.

Brenden Morrow, Patrik Berglund and Jaden Schwartz also scored for the Blues (24-7-4), who are 5-1-1 in their last seven games. Brian Elliot made 23 saves to record his second shutout of the season and 23rd of his NHL career.

The Oilers (11-24-3) have lost a season-high six straight games. They fell to 5-11-1 at home. It was the sixth time this season Edmonton has been shut out and the third time in five games.

SHARKS 3, STARS 2, SO

SAN JOSE, Calif. • Joe Thornton scored the lone shootout goal in the fifth round, and Alex Stalock stopped all five tries as San Jose overcame a two-goal deficit to beat Dallas.

Joe Pavelski and Jason Demers scored in regulation for the Sharks, who had lost six of eight before rallying for this win. Stalock made 44 saves and got the win in his first career shootout.

Ray Whitney and Antoine Roussel scored for the Stars, who were in position to win their third straight game but couldn't hold a third-period lead. Kari Lehtonen made 37 saves.
