Letter: Utah should save money, accept gay marriage

My husband and I have five children between us, three of whom are gay. Needless to say, we are ecstatic about the overturning of Amendment 3 to the Utah State Constitution, which banned gay marriage ("After same-sex marriage ruling, Utah seeks to keep the status quo."

Apparently the state intends to appeal this decision. A lot of taxpayer money will be spent fighting this, and it will become a primary focus for many of our lawmakers. Before long, same-sex marriage will be legal nationwide, and the LGBT community will be protected from the discrimination that they've dealt with for so long.

Why in the world would Utah's citizens, stand for such waste of time and money? Ironically, Utah could be the state that gets this issue to the U.S. Supreme Court, where it will be ruled illegal to discriminate against LGBT citizens. The entire country then will be constitutionally bound to honor same-sex marriage.

Our forefathers came here to escape the restrictions imposed on them by The Church of England. They felt each should be free to live by his/her own convictions. This concept is the very basis of our society, our heritage, our pride. Today, many people want to emulate the Church of England and impose their religious beliefs on everyone else. It's not freedom unless it's freedom for all.

Same-sex marriage will have no effect on others whatsoever. Let freedom ring.
