I am neither Catholic nor Mormon but I am aware that both churches certainly do their share of helping the poor. But I have been to services in all Protestant denominations, Catholic masses, and Jewish services as well. Most Protestant denominations have simple churches with minimal decorations, maybe stained glass windows. Jewish synagogues have nothing, no paintings, no statues, etc.
The Catholic churches, on the other hand are adorned with paintings, statues, windows, anything you can think of. Without meaning to offend anyone, imagine if just one pope's ornamentation piece was sold or given to make money to feed the poor. Soon we would have no poor! The same with the Mormon temples I've seen (before dedication).
These religions each try to outdo the other with money spent on buildings and frocks without respect as to what good that money could be doing for others. So in my personal opinion, why don't we worry more about the hungry and less about the trappings of the religions?
Same with the government!
