Today's 2014 Sundance Film Festival trailer introduces us to the voice — soft and quirky, but also loud and proud — of Rae Spoon.

Spoon is a transgender singer/songwriter from the Canadian province of Alberta, and the subject of filmmaker Chelsea McMullan's impressionistic documentary "My Prairie Home."

The film follows Spoon (who prefers the gender-neutral pronoun "they") on Greyhound buses and in anonymous motel rooms, as Spoon recounts a childhood in an evangelist Christian family and a coming-of-age and coming to terms with identity and sexuality.

"My Prairie Home" plays in the World Cinema Documentary competition of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. Its first screening is Friday, Jan. 17, at 6:45 p.m. at the Broadway Centre Cinemas in Salt Lake City. Its first Park City screening is Monday, Jan. 20, at 5:45 p.m. at the Prospector Square Theatre.
