U.S. District Court Judge Robert Shelby has declared Utah's ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional ("Federal judge strikes down Utah's same-sex marriage ban," Tribune, Dec. 20). I have friends on both sides of this issue. Those opponents of Shelby's ruling hope to be vindicated through multiple appeals to higher judicial entities. Their cause seems increasingly desperate and futile.

Proponents of same-sex marriage argue defending the conventions of a bygone era is a waste of time and money. I support the cost of a vigorous defense of traditional marriage. Both sides will benefit from the inevitable U.S. Supreme Court rejection of outdated arguments to settle the matter.

Anything short of that will feel unresolved.
