A man died Thursday night after running out of a hospital and onto the freeway in Layton.

James Flynn, 29, ran from Davis Hospital into the southbound lanes of the Antelope Drive-Interstate 15 offramp about 6:20 p.m., according to Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce. A car struck Flynn and he died from his injuries.

Royce said it was unclear why Flynn ran out onto the freeway or if he wanted to be hit. Royce also did not know why Flynn was in the hospital.

According to Google Maps, the Davis Hospital is just a few hundred feet from the offramp where Flynn was hit.

The driver of the vehicle that struck Flynn was uninjured.

The accident caused major delays, with investigators closing all but one southbound lane for several hours after the accident. By about 9 p.m. all the lanes were clear and traffic flow was returning to normal, Royce said.
