The first weekend of the new year usually has light traffic at the box office, and 2014 is no exception.

There's only one studio movie opening today, and it wasn't screened for local critics in time for review. It's "Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones," a spinoff of the found-footage horror saga — this time centering on a teen (Andrew Jacobs) in Oxnard, Calif., who discovers strange happenings going on around him.

The only new movie on the art-house list is "The Punk Singer," a spirited documentary about Kathleen Hanna. She's the former lead singer of the pioneering '90s punk band Bikini Kill, and a leader in the "riot grrrl" movement — the "third-wave feminism" campaign to enlighten and empower a new generation of women. Director Sini Anderson gathers enthusiastic interviews with Hanna's colleagues, fans and music critics, but it's the interviews with Hanna today that are the most revealing.
