In the 2004 general election, registered voters in Utah turned out in droves to vote.
There was a hotly contested presidential election between incumbent George W. Bush and Sen. John Kerry and a face-off between Jon Huntsman Jr. and Scott Matheson Jr. for Utah governor.
Also on that ballot: Amendment 3, which limited marriage rights in Utah to a man and a woman and barred recognition of any other unions and legal marriages performed in other states.
Overall, 74 percent of registered voters participated in the 2004 election, a participation rate that was 4 percent higher than in 2000.
Of the 2004 voters, 66 percent cast ballots in favor of Amendment 3 which means it was approved by 46 percent of the state's registered voters. The vote was 593,297 for versus 307,488 against.
For the record, the amendment failed in two of Utah's 29 counties: Grand, which includes Moab, and Summit, home to Park City.
In Grand County, the vote on Amendment 3 was 1,840 in favor and 2,163 against. In Summit County, the vote was 5,696 for and 9,079 against.
