State colleges: Northern Colorado defeats Southern Utah by nearly 40 points

Greeley, Colo. • Tim Huskisson scored 16 points, hitting 3 of 4 3-point attempts, to lead Northern Colorado to a dominating 91-55 victory over Southern Utah in a Big Sky Conference game Saturday night.

Jordan Wilson contributed 10 points for Northern Colorado (8-3, 2-0). The Bears have now won seven consecutive games at home.

Huskisson, who has now scored in double figures in six games this year, made the first six points as the Bears jumped out to a 6-0 lead. They took a 39-25 advantage into the halftime break. They continued the scoring deluge in the second half, leading 74-37 with 8:06 remaining in the game.

Southern Utah (1-10, 0-2) did close to 18-15 with 9:01 remaining in the first period, but the Bears went on a 17-2 run to stymie that come-back attempt. The Bears made 62 percent of their field goal attempts.

Utah Valley 82, Cal State Bakersfield 74 • Ben Aird scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Wolverines to victory in the Western Athletic Conference opener.

Zach Nelson made 9 of his 12 shots for 22 points and Keawe Enos went 3 of 4 from 3-point range for nine points for UVU (7-7, 1-0).

Women's basketball

BYU 69, Saint Mary's 67 (OT) • In Provo, Lexi Eaton scored a team-high 19 points, including the winner jumper with 24 seconds remaining in overtime, to lead the Cougars over the Gaels in West Coast Conference action. Jennifer Hamson tallied 15 points and 10 rebounds for BYU (13-2, 3-1 WCC), who held Saint Mary's to just 26 percent shooting.

Utah State 78, San Jose State 65 • Aggies coach Jerry Finkbeiner earned his 500th career victory, thanks to an 18-point performance by Jennifer Schlott. Franny Vaaulu had 12 points and, two rebounds and two blocks for Utah State (8-5, 2-0), which remains unbeaten in Mountain West play.

Portland State 66, Weber State 60 • In Portland, Ore., Amanda Hughes scored a game-high 19 points for the Wildcats, who remain winless in Big Sky Conference play. Zakiyyah Shahid-Martin scored 12 points for Weber State (4-7, 0-2), which shot just 31 percent.

Cal State Bakersfield 61, Utah Valley 59 • Karlee Kartchner missed a jumper at the buzzer for the Wolverines, who lost its first home league game since Jan. 26, 2013.

Rhaiah Spooner-Knight tallied 14 points and 11 rebounds for Utah Valley (3-11, 0-1 Western Athletic Conference).

Men's volleyball

Lewis 3, BYU 1 • In Romeville, Ill., the No. 3-ranked Cougars are still searching for a win early in the season after a four-set loss (25-22, 22-25, 25-21, 25-23) at No. 10 Lewis. Taylor Sander tallied 15 kills while Tyler Heap had a career-high 33 assists for BYU, which lost 3-0 against No. 7 Loyola Chicago on Friday.
