Bitter cold and blowing snow closed down stretches of highways in both southern Utah and near the Utah-Wyoming border Monday morning.

The Utah Department of Transportation issued alerts that Highway 143, from mileposts 17 to 28 in southern Utah, was shut down as high winds whipped snow into a near white-out.

Also closed in both directions due to extreme winter driving conditions was Highway 191 between the Utah state line and Interstate 80 in Daggett County.
