A Clearfield business owner died Tuesday, a day after he was accidentally run over on a loading ramp at Freeport Center, the Clearfield Police Department reported.

Robert Benton, 67, of Kaysville — who is co-owner of Benton Packaging — was run over by a pickup truck that was backing down a loading ramp at the business, at Building F7 at the Freeport Center.

Police were called to the scene at 8:22 a.m. Monday.

Benton was transported to a local hospital for treatment of leg and shoulder injuries. At the hospital it was determined Benton also suffered serious internal injuries to his chest.

He died Tuesday at 12:13 a.m.

Benton was struck on a ramp that is shared with another business, Freeport West Storage. The 49-year-old driver of the pickup truck that struck Benton works for Freeport West Storage, police said.

The accident is being investigated by the Clearfield Police Department and the Utah State Medical Examiner's Office.
