Vail, Colo. • One person is dead and three others are injured following an avalanche in the backcountry near Vail, Colo.

Eagle County Sheriff's spokeswoman Jessie Mosher says the slide happened at around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in East Vail Chutes, an area between Vail Mountain and Vail Pass.

She says the three survivors don't have life-threatening injuries.

The avalanche danger in the area is rated as considerable. The Colorado Avalanche Information Center says slides there are becoming harder to trigger but when slides develop they are very large and dangerous.

Five people have died in avalanches in Colorado, Wyoming and Montana in the last two weeks.
