America's inequality is caused by narcissistic "leaders" who revel in the power to decide "for the people" like a parent for a child, but lack the courage to change antiquated laws for use "by the people."
A second-grader told me: "I can't play with that girl because she is different." I encouraged her to play with everyone in her group. Like the 1958 movie "South Pacific" explained: Separatism is "carefully taught"!
Separate church matters from state matters, don't avoid people you disagree with.
A state autocrat has no right to determine who uses a marriage license: gay, straight, black or white. The license does not prove the length of a union, but it buys the right to be treated with dignity. If I want my union sanctioned by a clergy, that too is my business.
In 17 years, Tom Clark's wounds hopefully healed ("Marriage equality is more than a legal issue," Opinion, Jan. 4). But some (federal) judges' rulings are still based on the insight of a 6-year-old, separating people who are not like them. It might take another 60 years before equality is based on acceptance instead of separation.
