Numerous events planned to commemorate Martin Luther King Day

A number of events are planned in Utah to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. They include:

A Conversation with Sybrina Fulton

Sybrina Fulton's 17-year-old son Trayvon Martin was shot by George Zimmerman, who was acquitted of second-degree murder in July. Since Martin's death, Fulton has spoken against the controversial ruling to raise awareness of racial, ethnic and gender profiling. Fulton will speak and lead a discussion.

Community Outreach Day

Volunteers from Provo and Orem will gather for Community Outreach Day to honor King's legacy through service. Representatives from Brigham Young University, Utah Valley University, and United Way will work together on the event.

Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Luncheon

The NAACP Salt Lake branch will host its 30th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Luncheon. Monique Lin-Luse, special counsel, education group, NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, will speak. March for Youth

U. of U. students and members of the community will march 1.3 miles from East High School to Kingsbury Hall at the U. Donations accepted at the end of the march go toward the Rev. France Davis Scholarship Fund.

Discovery Gateway Activities

Discovery Gateway's Martin Luther King Jr. activities will include creating a paper kids chain in the "35 Years of Play" exhibit. In Studio 444, there will be an "I Have a Dream" chalkboard and the book "The Crayon Box that Talked in the Curiosity Shop." Community Resistance to Institutionalized Racial Profiling

The Salt Lake Tribune's Jennifer Napier-Pearce will facilitate a panel discussion about the damaging effects of racial profiling and how to combat it. Panelists include Chris Burbank, Salt Lake City police chief; Debbie Rocha, director of Salt Lake Early Intervention Services; Brenda Valles, director of Research and Assessment at the U.; and Theresa Martinez, associate professor in the Department of Sociology at the U.

Film and Panel Discussion: "Crimes of Police"

"Crimes of Police" is a documentary on police brutality from the perspective of victims who have been racially profiled. Following the film, a panel of city officials, community members and the film's director/producer will discuss the film.

Keynote Address — Marc Lamont Hill

Marc Lamont Hill is a leading hip-hop generation intellectual. Mitzvah Day

In honor of Dr. King's life's work and the national holiday that honors him, Congregation Kol Ami's religious school families and congregants are taking a day off from studying Hebrew and Jewish texts to put Jewish values into action. Mitzvah Day is a day of service projects that will meet needs in the larger community.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ecumenical Service

Granger Community Christian Church will present Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Ecumenical Service. The keynote address will be given by Scott B. Hayashi, Bishop of the Episcopal Church in Utah. Guest speaker will be Rebecca Chavez-Houck of the Utah House of Representatives.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day March and Program

Westminster College will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a march and program on Jan. 20, 2014. The program will kick off with a march through Sugar House starting in front of Converse Hall on 1300 E. 1840 South. Following the march, the college will host an event with the Black Storytellers of Utah and the G. Brown Quintet at 11 a.m. in the Gore School of Business Auditorium.
