BYU basketball: Cougars rout LMU 91-68 after slow start

Provo • Matt Carlino is smiling again.

BYU's mercurial junior guard, benched a few games ago after the worst slump of his career, scored 18 points off the bench and provided a huge lift when the Cougars were listing in the first half on Saturday night.

Tyler Haws added 31 points and BYU routed Loyola Marymount 91-68 in front of 15,187 at the Marriott Center.

Kyle Collinsworth chipped in 20 points and nine rebounds as BYU improved to 3-2 in the West Coast Conference, 11-7 overall. LMU fell to 2-4 and 10-8.

The Cougars got a bit of revenge, after losing 87-76 to LMU two weeks ago in Los Angeles. It came without the services of freshman forward Eric Mika, who was held out for the second-straight game with a bruised hip.

The Lions led most of the first half, and had a 38-37 advantage at the break. They had a 42-37 lead early in the second half before the Cougars went on a 10-0 run to take control.

Anthony Ireland led LMU with 20 points and C.J. Blackwell added 12. Freshman Evan Payne, who had 27 points in the meeting two weeks ago, had just four points on Saturday night.
