Parts of Utah remained under a winter storm warning Sunday as the next batch of cold weather was expected to move into the state.
Woodruff, Randolph, Alta, Brighton and the Mirror Lake Highway were all encompassed in the warning, which remains in effect until 5 a.m. Monday.
The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City said new snowfall totals could reach up to 18 inches and winds with gusts up to 70 mph in some places were also expected.
In the Salt Lake Valley, less than an inch of new snow was expected to fall Sunday.
But anyone hoping to take advantage of the fresh powder should use extreme caution in the backcountry. An avalanche warning was in place for the mountains of northern and central Utah.
The Utah Avalanche Center warned that "very dangerous" avalanche conditions exist through the weekend. Backcountry enthusiasts were warned to avoid being beneath steep mountain slopes.
The Moab range also had a "considerable" risk of slides Sunday.
On the plus-side though, Utahns could take a deep breath of air without coughing due to smoggy skies.
The air quality was expected to be good through Monday statewide.
