One dead in head-on crash in Rich County

Winter conditions in northeastern Utah apparently contributed to a head-on crash that caused the death of a woman and sent at least one other person to the hospital late Monday morning.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce said blowing and drifting snow were present when the 10:38 a.m. crash occurred on U.S. 89, about 5 miles west of Garden City in Rich County.

The UHP said 58-year-old Becky L. Green, from Garden City, died at the scene.

A 1990 Chevrolet suburban was traveling northeast toward Garden City when the vehicle rounded a curve and the driver encountered drifting snow and packed roads and attempted to slow down, the UHP reported. The driver lost control of his vehicle and slid into the oncoming lanes of travel.

The driver of a 1994 GMC Sierra, who was traveling southwest toward Logan, saw the oncoming Suburban and moved as far as possible to the right against a metal guardrail, where it was struck head-on by the Suburban.

Green, a passenger in the GMC, was dead at the scene. She was not wearing a seatbelt because she had a medical condition that made wearing a seatbelt difficult, the UHP said.

The drivers of both vehicles were injured in the crash but both were expected to survive, Royce said.
