Layton Kmart fight over $35 drug debt lands 2 in jail

A fight in a Kmart restroom over a purportedly unfulfilled drug deal led to the arrests of two men by Layton police.

Police Lt. Shawn Horton said officers were called to the store at 2010 N. Main St. about 8 p.m. Monday after a store employee reported five men, at least one of them with a knife, were battling in the men's room.

Police located two 19-year-old men who acknowledged they had arranged to meet with an 18-year-old male on the pretense of buying drugs. Actually, the two were upset that the third man had kept money from a previous deal without providing the promised drugs.

This time, the pair told police, they really weren't intending to buy drugs, but wanted to collect $35 the third man owed them.

The 18-year-old arrived at the restroom with two other men and confronted the first two. When one of the original two males pulled a knife and demanded the money, a brief scuffle ensued. All five men eventually ended up in the store's parking lot.

The 18-year-old and his companions eventually drove away without turning over any cash. They were later located at a Layton residence, but officers found no evidence of drugs or drug-dealing and no arrests were made.

However, police did arrest the two 19-year-olds, who were booked into the Davis County Jail on suspicion of first-degree felony attempted aggravated robbery.
