Small plane makes emergency landing near Salt Lake City airport

A pilot escaped injury after he crash-landed just northeast of Salt Lake City International Airport.

Airport spokeswoman Barbara Gann said the Cessna Centurion's pilot radioed that he thought he was running out of fuel when he decided to land just northeast of the airport near 2100 N. 1700 West just before 2 p.m. Wednesday.

All of the runways were closed at the airport for 20 minutes while officials located the plane. One Southwest Airlines flight en route to Salt Lake City from Oakland was diverted to Ogden, but there were no other major impacts, Gann said.

The pilot was flying alone and was not injured. The plane did suffer some damage when the man crashed in the marshy field, Salt Lake City police said.
