"Love Child"
World Documentary
** (Two stars)
Director Valerie Veatch ("ME@THE ZOO") returns to Sundance with another exploration of the impact of Internet and technology on culture, this time through South Korea and an infamous case in which a young couple's 3-month-old daughter died from neglect while they were playing an online video game. Though a compelling case and one that acts as an appropriate window into the changing technological landscape in South Korea, Veatch neglects to focus on the couple, instead favoring to examine the policy debate that raged on in the country following the trial. But viewers may yearn for more about the couple's obsession and how their love of gaming overpowered the love of their child. Though sometimes interesting, "Love Child" only scratches the surface of a troubling cultural shift among Asia's young people.
