A male teenager was fatally struck by a car when he inexplicably walked onto southbound Interstate 15 early Tuesday morning.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce said 2:42 a.m. accident occurred at 13400 South in Draper. Dead at the scene was Christopher L. Vass, 19, of Draper.

"[The victim] was wearing dark clothing and not seen by the driver of a 2008 Ford Focus when he stepped onto the lane from the right [shoulder]," Royce said.

While the incident remained under investigation, UHP confirmed that along with other possibilities, it was looking into whether the incident may have been a suicide.

A man matching Vass' description may have been observed walking and acting suspiciously along the freeway earlier, but Royce said that had not been confirmed.

UHP troopers and Draper police both responded, closing down several southbound lanes as they investigated.
