Mountain West round-up — Colorado State in mix for impact transfer, plus more

Taking a look around the Mountain West and what's happening as we delve a bit deeper into conference play. Trying out a format with teams given by standings in the Mountain West:

San Diego State (5-0) • Ranked No. 7 in the nation, the Aztecs still have their sights higher. The San Diego Union-Tribune reports San Diego State hopes to improve its national standing going on the road this week. Those games are at San Jose State and Utah State.

New Mexico (4-1) • The Lobos have had struggles with its own big three - Alex Kirk, Kendall Williams and Cameron Bairstow - but freshman Cullen Neal came off the bench in the last game to help the team out, the Albuquerque Journal writes. New Mexico plays Boise State at home and Colorado State on the road this week.

Nevada (4-1) • Although the Wolfpack has done well in league play, it is still missing a piece that could really help the team down the stretch. The Reno Gazette Journal reports that forward Ronnie Stevens Jr. may not be available this week after the team hoped he would be. Nevada plays at Fresno and hosts Colorado State.

Boise State (3-2) • The Idaho Statesman points out that despite not having much size, the Broncos have been finding ways to rebound well this year, and it has been a big key to victory — as the Aggies can attest. Boise State plays New Mexico on the road and San Jose State at home this week.

Colorado State (3-3) • According to the Coloradoan, the Rams are in the hunt for a transfer that could make the team elite next season: Chane Behanan, a top-shelf forward who ran afoul of Louisville's team rules. Colorado State has a break before its contest this weekend at Nevada.

Air Force (3-3) • The Falcons have been better than expected so far, but revealed this week that the team is dealing with a significant off-court issue: Assistant coach Drew Long has been fighting cancer, the Colorado Springs Gazette reports. The Falcons have a home game against Wyoming before taking the weekend off.

Wyoming (2-2) • Staring down a game against Air Force, the Cowboys have a dilemma: Do they stop penetration or stop 3-pointers? It will be tough to do both, WyoSports.net writes. Wyoming visits the Falcons on Wednesday, then come back for a home game against Nevada.

UNLV (2-3) • Did the Rebels make progress on last week's road trip? A columnist from the Las Vegas Review Journal argues that yes, they did - they're closer to competiting than some think. UNLV plays the Aggies at home tomorrow, then host Fresno State on Saturday.

Fresno State (1-5) • A little bit of disappointment for Fresno State from last weekend, as the Bulldogs forced New Mexico to take jump shots at first, but then couldn't keep the Lobos off the line, writes the Fresno Bee. The Bulldogs have games against Nevada at home and UNLV on the road.

San Jose State (0-6) • The Spartans are making some kind of strides, but they haven't gotten any wins yet. Things won't get any easier with San Diego State coming to town, the San Jose Mercury News writes. After the Aztecs at home, SJSU has Boise State on the road.
