The irony of the article about our "bad air" ("Utah air is bad, but not worst in nation, Tribune, Jan. 21) falling on the same page as the one entitled "Armed car thief makes off with idling car in west SLC," Tribune, Jan. 21) is not difficult to appreciate.

Throat-choking, life-shortening, health-threatening pollution ("hazy sunshine," anyone?) is awaiting collective action to eliminate, mitigate, or reduce. A chilled fannie is so difficult to endure. Bundled children are an "inconvenient truth" of winter. In Cottonwood Heights we must be "warming our cars."

Law enforcement is encouraged to be vigilant where "auto theft rings" are concerned but not for preventing large industrial air polluters from poisoning us.

I, however, have come to think of the auto theft rings as conservative capitalists who recognize opportunity for profit and are simply making the most of stupidity wherever displayed. If our auto theft rings are carrying their end of Gov. Gary Herbert's call to take personal responsibility for clearing our bad air, I salute them.
