A Salt Lake City traffic stop turned into a brief foot chase that ended with recovery of a firearm and an arrest.

Police said the incident began when an officer pulled over a car at 860 S. State Street about 7:55 p.m. Wednesday. A male passenger jumped out and ran, but was quickly located and taken into custody.

However, a passerby told police that the suspect had dropped a handgun as he initially fled. The weapon was recovered, and found to be loaded.

The 18-year-old suspect was arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of fleeing a police officer and carrying a concealed weapon.

The driver was not arrested.
