Salt Lake City cops looking for suspect in credit card 'skimming'

Salt Lake City police are looking for a man they say used a digital data "skimming" device to access and steal funds from multiple victims' debit and credit card accounts.

Detectives said the device was placed on a postage vending machine at the Kearns Post Office, 5495 S. 4015 West, where the data thefts occurred between Dec. 13 and Dec. 18 and reportedly involved at least six victims.

Police said the suspect — a white male, 30-40 years old, with light facial hair and wearing a black jacket and black beanie-style cap — used the stolen card and personal identification numbers to create counterfeit cards. He then allegedly used those cards to make hundreds of dollars in cash withdrawals from ATMs within the downtown Salt Lake City area earlier this month.

Security camera images from the ATMs were released to the public Thursday in hopes someone may recognize the suspect.
