A new energy-efficient Herriman home built by Garbett Homes was awarded a platinum award from the 2014 Professional Builder Design Awards competition in California. The home was designed by Irvine, Calif.-based KTGY Group, Inc., Architecture + Planning.
The three-story, five-bedroom home at 5047 W. Ambermont Drive is the first attainable, or affordable, house in Utah that achieves a U.S. Department of Energy HERS (House Energy Rating System) rating of 0. The house has since been sold for $570,000 and won the Single-Family Production (2,001 to 3,000 square feet) category.
To achieve that rating, the home has double-paned windows, special frames and seals for the windows and doors, four types of insulation, and solar panels to produce electricity. The monthly utility bill for the home is about $10 per month.
