SWAT standoff in West Valley City ends peacefully

SWAT officers and police surrounded a home in a West Valley City neighborhood early Tuesday morning, eventually talking a man and a woman inside into surrendering just before dawn.

West Valley City police Deputy Chief Mike Powell said that about 2 a.m., a 911 call from a neighbor came in reporting a woman crying and loud noises, possibly gunshots, from inside the home at 4129 W. Mann Way (3625 South).

"Officers arrived on the scene and gathered additional information from another neighbor who reported hearing loud bangs that may have been gunshots, too," Powell said. "Our officers secured the area and asked for SWAT, as a precautionary measure."

Over the next several hours, negotiators tried unsuccessfully to reach a male inside — who at one point walked past a window and waived at police outside.

"Ultimately, they reached the male via telephone and he decided to cooperate. He came out the front door with the female [about 6 a.m.] and both were taken into custody," Powell said.

The couple were still being questioned late Tuesday morning. Powell said while neither of them were injured, it was unclear if gunshots had actually be fired inside the home.

"Our detectives are still trying to figure out what happened in there," he said.
