Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Cory Wride, 44, was shot to death Thursday when he stopped his patrol car to check on a pulled-over pickup truck with flashers blinking on State Road 73 between Eagle Mountain and Cedar Fort. Investigators say the driver was believed to have been Jose Garcia-Jauregui, 27, who was later caught and died Friday from wounds he suffered in a confrontation with law enforcement.

Deputy Greg Sherwood encountered Garcia-Jauregui in Santaquin. Someone fired a handgun out the rear window, striking Sherwood in the head, Utah County Sheriff Jim Tracy has said. Sherwood was hospitalized in critical condition, but was upgraded to serious condition Sunday and is expected to recover.
