Wyoming guard suspended after striking Aggies' Spencer Butterfield

A Wyoming player has been suspended for one game following his ejection while playing Utah State on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore guard Josh Adams will miss the Cowboys' game at New Mexico on Wednesday night for "striking an opponent," a flagrant foul that came against Aggies' guard Spencer Butterfield. The Mountain West announced the suspension in a news release on Monday morning.

Butterfield told KVNU radio after the game that Adams, Wyoming's second-leading scorer and assist leader, had hit him in the stomach. The scuffle between the players led to Adams landing on the scorer's table and a foul on Butterfield. Officials reviewed footage after the foul and determined Adams had committed a flagrant two violation, and he was tossed from the game with a few minutes left in the second half.

Prior to his ejection, Adams led the Cowboys with 19 points and eight assists.

Assistant coach Jeremy Shyatt, filling in on an interim basis for his father coach Larry Shyatt, told the Wyoming Star-Tribune that the team accepted the decision.

Athletic director Tom Burman echoed that sentiment in his statement.

"We know Josh is disappointed in his actions late in the game on Saturday versus Utah State, and he is disappointed that his actions will cause him to miss this Wednesday's game at New Mexico," Burman said. "But we accept the one-game suspension, and we will support him as he learns from this experience. We look forward to having him back for the game on Saturday at UNLV."
