Haws passes Wesley as 8th-leading scorer in BYU hoops history

Provo • Another night, another big scoring game for BYU's Tyler Haws.

The junior scored 27 points on 9-for-12 shooting in Thursday's 89-76 win over Santa Clara, the fifth straight game in which Haws has scored 20 or more points.

Haws probably would have got to 30 for the eighth time this season, but rested the final 10 minutes, 21 seconds of the game.

Jimmer Fredette scored 30 or more points eight times in his junior season.

As it were, Haws passed became the eighth-leading scorer in school history, passing Mekeli Wesley.

Haws has scored in double figures in 38 straight games, the seventh-longest such streak ever at BYU. He passed Bernie Fryer in that category.

He also stayed hot from the 3-point line. Haws made a 3-pointer in the first half, his 18th made 3-pointer in his last 30 attempts, before missing a trey in the second half.

Resting up

Thursday's game was the 25th of the season for the Cougars, who have only six games left until the West Coast Conference tournament March 6-11 at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.

Coach Dave Rose is taking the steps necessary to keep his team fresh, knowing February can be a grind.

"We haven't had that long of practices, but they have been really focused on what we need to do in the games. Not as much skill development stuff. More just focusing on our next opponent," Matt Carlino said.

Bartley gets off the bench

Freshman Frank Bartley IV got to play some meaningful minutes for the first time in a long time against the Broncos, and made them count.

Bartley played five minutes in the first half, made the only shot he took and added an assist and a rebound. He entered the second half with 6:01 remaining, but by then the Cougars had a 80-58 lead.

He had just six points in last 10 games before Thursday night.

Briefly

Officials for the game were Michael Irving, Klaus Endrissat and James Giron. Giron stopped the game in the first half while Matt Carlino was at the free-throw line to walk all the way over to BYU's bench to ask assistant coach Mark Pope to sit down. … The teams combined to go 28 for 30 from the free-throw line in the first half, with BYU going 19 of 21 and SCU going 9 of 9.
