A woman died while BASE jumping in Zion National Park.
She was not immediately identified. The woman jumped off Mt. Kinesava Saturday afternoon and fell about 1,500 feet, said park spokeswoman Aly Baltrus.
"It sounds like her chute did not open properly," Baltrus said.
The woman, in her mid-30s, fell about 2:30 p.m., but it took a man who was there with her about four hours to reach a point where he could call for help, Baltrus said.
This marks the park's first BASE jumping death, Baltrus said. The sport is not allowed in the park.
The park service intends to find and retrieve the woman's body Sunday when the sun rises.
