Letter: Utah will play the fool in future film about marriage discrimination

It begins with a march down Main Street in Hillsboro, Tenn. The marchers are singing, "Give me that Old Time Religion … It's good enough for me." I am referring to the 1960 film "Inherit the Wind," a dramatization of the so-called Scopes Monkey Trial held in 1925, which pitted Clarence Darrow against William Jennings Bryan in the courtroom.

It looks like Utah is going for a remake of this film, but instead of opposing instruction in evolution, we're trying to preserve marriage discrimination. The state hired a big-time lawyer from Washington, D.C. Several fundamentalist churches have teamed up to file amicus briefs to the court. Bankroll is coming from the propaganda institute that calls itself the Sutherland Institute, and taxpayer dollars will certainly be used. The Salt Lake Tribune is assuming the role E.K. Hornbeck of the Baltimore Herald played in the movie.

Quite a drama; I wonder who will play the main roles? Will we look as bigoted and foolish in 35 years as those people look in the movie? I don't want that Old Time Religion; it is definitely not good enough for me.
