The Utah Senate passed legislation Thursday clarifying the residency qualifications for candidates and voters, a result of questions that arose concerning the residency status of several candidates who vied to replace former Attorney General John Swallow.
Sen. Todd Weiler, R-Woods Cross, was on a panel of lawyers assigned to vet candidates seeking to replace Swallow and said questions were raised about whether three met the qualifications, but the statute was unclear.
Weiler's bill, SB90, seeks to tighten the definitions for residency to prevent conflicts in the future. The measure passed the Senate unanimously and moves to the House.
