Southeast Salt Lake City power outage lightning-caused

Electrical service to the last of 3,100 Salt Lake City homes affected by a storm-related power outage had been restored and repairs made by early Friday morning.

Rocky Mountain Power spokeswoman Margaret Ohler said the outage came along with rain and lightning that hit the region around 3:30 p.m. Thursday. By 7:30 p.m., most customers were back on the power grid, but 300 remained in the dark into late Thursday night.

The outage, within an area of the city bounded by 200 to 900 South streets and 300 East to 1100 East, began when a circuit failed at a substation.

Ohler said all services had been restored by 10:52 p.m. Thursday, though crews patrolled power lines into early Friday morning as they investigated what initially triggered the cause.

It was determined that a lightning bolt had hit and downed a power line, triggering the circuit failure and subsequent outage.
