Salt Lake City police: 7-Eleven thief's raid ends with Taser jolt

Salt Lake City police say a drunk man's raid on a convenience store's shelves ended with a dose of pepper spray, a jolt from a Taser, arrest and incarceration.

Detective Dennis McGowan said the incident took place 12:10 a.m. Friday at the 7-Eleven store, 109 S. 300 East. The suspect entered the store and started grabbing items before heading out the door without paying.

The clerk stepped into his path, briefly blocking his exit, but the suspect shoved him out of the way, went outside, got into his car and sped from the scene.

However, responding officers soon located the suspect's vehicle and pulled it over. When they approached the driver, he became combative and refused repeated commands to exit the vehicle.

Officers first used pepper spray, and when that didn't bring compliance, they deployed the Taser to take the suspect into custody.

After being medically cleared, the 31-year-old man was booked into Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of theft, resisting police and other counts.
