State colleges: BYU volleyball beats Pacific

Josue Rivera posted 13 kills and Phil Fuchs added 11 as the fourth-ranked BYU men's volleyball team defeated Pacific 25-19, 25-16, 20-25, 25-19 on Friday in Stockton, Calif.

Carson Heninger contributed nine kills and seven blocks for the Cougars, who improved to 9-3 overall, 9-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Pacific fell to 2-10, 1-8.

BYU stays in California on Saturday for an 8 p.m. matchup at No. 8 Stanford.

Baseball

Sacramento State 3, Utah 2 • Kody Davis and Josh Rose drove in Utah's two runs, but the Utes couldn't overcome solid Sacramento State relief and lost their season opener on the road. Utah starter Mitch Watrous took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out three in 52⁄3 innings.

"We played solid, but we just couldn't get a whole lot going," Utah coach Bill Kinneberg said.

Kansas 10, BYU 4 • The Cougars gave up a six-run seventh inning that broke a 4-4 tie, and BYU lost its season opener to the Jayhawks in the first game of a four-game series in Peoria, Ariz. Bret Lopez led the Cougars with two RBIs.

"We didn't get the job done," BYU coach Mike Littlewood said. "We had a couple of bad plays on defense and it got away from us, but those are plays you need to make."

SLCC • Salt Lake Community College (4-4) split two games at the Coyote Slug-Out in Las Vegas, defeating Prairie Baseball Academy of Canada 12-6 but falling to Chipola (Fla.) College 8-0.

Softball

Utah • The Utes won two games to open the Easton Desert Classic in Las Vegas, beating Toledo 8-3 and UTEP 4-3. Hannah Flippen, Kate Dickman and Marissa Mendenhall homered against the Rockets. In the victory over the Miners, the Utes (4-3) scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning to take the lead for good. Pitcher Sammy Cordova earned both wins for Utah.

BYU • The Cougars split two games at the Easton Desert Classic, edging Portland 5-4 and losing to Chattanooga 8-0. Against the Vikings, Ashlee Robinson tied the game with an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh, followed by Megan Arnold's pinch-hit fielder's choice that drove in the winning run from third. In the second game, BYU (4-4) managed two hits against Chattanooga.

Weber State 3, Texas Tech 2 • Brooke Silva hit a game-winning two-run single in the bottom of the seventh to give the Wildcats (4-2) a victory to open the Troy Cox Classic in Las Cruces, N.M. Silva also homered in the third inning and was 3-for-4 for the game.
