State colleges: Utah pitcher Tanner stymies Sacramento State

Utah pitcher Tanner Banks recorded nine strikeouts as the Utes beat Sacramento State 2-1 on Saturday in Sacramento, Calif., for their first win of the season.

Banks spent most of the game locked in a pitchers duel with Sacramento State's Brennan Leitao.

Banks went seven innings, allowing one unearned run and just two hits. Leitao allowed two runs over seven innings, striking out four.

The Utes scored the first run of the game in the sixth inning. Cory Hunt was issued a one-out walk and after stealing second, came around to score on Konnor Armijo's RBI single to left center.

Utah scored its second run of the game in the seventh inning. Yagi led off the inning with a double down the left field line, and scored on Young's RBI single up the middle. Biss Larsen would also have a single in the inning and Josh Rose walked as the Utes stranded two on base.

Young went 3-for-3 at the plate while Konnor Armijo was 2-for-4.

Kansas 2-11, BYU 0-10 • In Peoria, Ariz., Kansas completed the doubleheader sweep by winning the second game on Tucker Tharp's walk-off single in the 10th inning.

Gymnastics

Topping the 194-point mark for the fourth week in a row, Utah State gymnastics placed third in a quad meet at No. 13 Oregon State in Corvallis, Ore. The Aggies edged out Seattle Pacific, but fell to the Beavers and No. 16 Boise State. Utah State notched a 48.850 on vault, 48.150 on bars, 48.150 on beam and a 48.825 on floor, contributing to the 194.025 total.
