Nickel Creek will play Kingsbury Hall on May 14

The country-bluegrass trio Nickel Creek is launching its 25th anniversary tour — and Salt Lake City is on the itinerary.

The trio will perform Wednesday, May 14, at Kingsbury Hall on the University of Utah campus.

Nickel Creek — made up of Chris Thile (mandolin/vocals) and siblings Sara Watkins (fiddle/vocals) and Sean Watkins (guitar/vocals) — formed in 1989, when Thile and Sara Watkins were 8 years old and Sean Watkins was 11. They earned a loyal fanbase on the festival circuit, and released their first album in 2000.

After two more albums as a group ("Why Should the Fire Die?" in 2005, and the Grammy-winning "This Side" in 2002), the band members have thrived separately. Thile's other band, Punch Brothers, have released three albums and were featured on the "Inside Llewyn Davis" soundtrack. Meanwhile, the Watkinses are regulars at the L.A. club Largo — while Sara has released solo albums and played with The Decembrists, as Sean has formed the band Fiction Family with Switchfoot's Jon Foreman.
