There are too many dog owners ignoring leash laws and not picking up after their pets in Millcreek Canyon. During three ski trips in the canyon with my dog last week, I observed numerous piles of dog poop and poop-filled plastic bags that littered the trail. This situation is intolerable, unsustainable and needs to change.

We are fortunate to enjoy the privilege of accessing Millcreek Canyon with our dogs. Unfortunately, we will lose this privilege unless we commit now to educating and policing ourselves.

Dogs should always be leashed in the parking areas near the trailheads and throughout on even-number days, as the law requires. We must closely supervise and pick up after our dogs. When we observe other dog owners who do not follow these rules, we should remind them, educate them and demonstrate responsible behavior.

The failure of dog owners to obey the rules in Millcreek will doom the future for the majority of responsible, law-abiding citizens and their dogs who enjoy being in the canyon. We have a shared responsibility to care for the canyon and keep it the special place that it is.
