As a retired Utah educator, I'm appalled by Jim Sears' comments ("Common Core is about teaching socialism, communism," Forum, Feb. 17), which assume the federal government is indoctrinating learners with socialism and communism. His paranoid rant accuses the "common core" as teaching wrong values and poor academics and inducing guilt within students.

Is Sears referring to the Utah State Core that is adopting more national standards? Obviously, his lack of knowledge regarding the true facts, objectives and standards behind implementing a national core to meet the demands of a rapidly changing country and world is exemplified when he states, "You cannot have a productive discussion with ideologues and idiots. Neither are willing to listen and neither have the intellect to understand what the conversation is about anyway."

Perhaps if Sears would listen to his own advice, he wouldn't make such an ignoramus of himself.
