Rep. Becky Edwards, R-North Salt Lake, is pushing a bill that would authorize Utah's Division of Air Quality to make laws more stringent than federal regulations set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Edwards said HB121 removes the restriction in current Utah law that prevents the state's DAQ from making rules and regulations stricter than EPA standards.

"We have unique geography here and we have unique needs," Edwards said. "But we don't have any unique Utah-specific research for our state. So that's a problem because we can't make decisions that are best for Utah when we don't have the good data."
