SB139 would raise registration fees for alternative fuel vehicles, including natural gas, electric and hybrids cars and trucks. Registering a hybrid electric car now costs $43, but if the bill passes, it would cost $138.
The bill's sponsor, Sen. Wayne Harper, R-Taylorsville, says new roads and road maintenance are paid for by gas taxes, but because these clean-fuel vehicles use much less gasoline or none at all, owners aren't paying their fair share for road upkeep.
