State colleges: Utah Valley loses to Kansas City, falls into tie atop WAC

Kansas City, Mo. • Martez Harrison scored 24 points and UMKC stunned Utah Valley 74-56 on Saturday night, dropping the Wolverines out of sole possession of first place in the Western Athletic Conference.

Nelson Kirksey added 16 points for the Kangaroos (8-18, 5-8), who snapped a six-game losing streak. UMKC shot 50 percent from the field and made 9 of 20 3-point tries (45 percent).

Utah Valley (16-10, 10-3) had a two-game win streak broken and is now tied atop the WAC with New Mexico State, the Wolverines' next opponent. Holton Hunsaker scored 17 points, Hayes Garrity 16 and Zach Nelson 15 for Utah Valley. Ben Aird grabbed 11 rebounds.

UMKC led by 11 at halftime and a 14-0 run early in the second half, sparked by nine points from Kirksey, gave the Kangaroos a 51-28 advantage. The Wolverines never seriously threatened after that.

Weber St. 86, Montana St. 68 • In Bozeman, Mont., Davion Berry scored 20 points, Jordan Richardson added 19 and Weber State (15-9, 12-4) ended a two-game skid to remain atop the Big Sky Conference.

Jeremy Senglin added 12 points and Joel Bolomboy matched his season average of 11 rebounds for the Wildcats (15-9, 12-4), who landed 58 percent from the field, and hit 10-of-17 3-pointers while Montana managed just two of eight from beyond the arc.

Eastern Washington 85, Southern Utah 74 • In Cedar City, Eric Rippetoe led Southern Utah with 17 points but the Thunderbirds (1-24, 0-16) remained winless in the Big Sky Conference.

SLCC 101, Colorado Northwestern CC 66 • Jaden Jackson went 8-for-9 from 3-point range and scored a career-high 33 points to lead Salt Lake Community College to the win.

Women's basketball

BYU 91, Loyola Marymount 67 • In Los Angeles, Kim Beeston scored a career-high 27 points, and Jennifer Hamson had 23 points and 19 rebounds as the Cougars (23-5, 13-4) cruised to the West Coast Conference win.

Southern Utah 86, Portland St. 79 • In Portland, Ore., Carli Moreland scored 25 points and Hailey Mandelko scored 24 to lead the Thunderbirds (17-8, 11-5) to the Big Sky Conference victory.

Montana St. 75, Weber St. 71 • In Ogden, Kalie Matthews and Briana Averette led Weber State (6-18, 2-14 Big Sky) with 13 points each, but the Wildcats' rally came up short.

Ashley Brumwell scored 20 points for Montana State (13-12, 8-8).

SLCC 72, Colorado Northwester CC 50 • Mercedes Riggs scored 16 points for the Bruins. as Salt Lake Community College (24-6, 13-2) clinched a share of the Scenic West Athletic Conference regular-season title.
