Armed standoff in Murray ends peacefully

A police welfare check on an armed and purportedly suicidal man turned into a three-hour standoff that ended early Monday morning with the man surrendering.

Murray police spokesman Kenny Bass said officers were dispatched to the home in the 1700 East block of Vine Street about 10 p.m. Sunday after receiving a 911 call that a shot had been fired inside the home.

"He was having an argument with his girlfriend and at some time during that he fired a shotgun into the ceiling," Bass said. "She fled the house and called police."

Initial attempts to contact the man, who had made comments to the girlfriend about killing himself, were unsuccessful.

Police set up a containment area and continued efforts to negotiate with the man until 1 a.m. Monday, when he came to the front door and surrendered.
