A motorist driving in west Salt Lake City early Tuesday morning barely escaped a carjacking by five men, police say.
Salt Lake City police Detective Robin Snyder said the incident occurred about 1 a.m. after the male driver had parked near 800 West and South Temple Street
One man initially approached, banging on the car with a baton-like device, and then four more men approached as the driver sped from the scene and called 911.
Police soon found the baton-wielding suspect nearby in a homeless shelter and located the other four suspects a short time later, but only the first suspect, a 22-year-old man, was arrested.
He was booked into the Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of attempted aggravated robbery and outstanding warrants.
