Letter: California gull is LDS bird, should not be state bird

In arguing that the California gull should remain the state bird, Luana Chapman has cemented the case against it ("Gull important to Utah," Forum Feb. 25).
She directs us to no greater authority than the Wikipedia entry, "Miracle of the Gulls." I looked it up. It says some historians question the credibility of the account. Next, she points us to the seagull statue on Temple Square.
Fine, the California gull can be the official gull of Temple Square. Utah citizens should choose
a bird not named after a different state, and not from LDS lore. Let's ask the folks who were here first and for whom the state is named.
